Interestingly, he identified one salmon farmer whose operation earns a "super green" designation from the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch List: Per Heggelund, a native of Norway who came to the United States in 1965. Heggelund, CEO of Aquaseed, holds an M.S. in food science and an M.B.A. in finance and international business and in the early 1908s pioneered the importation of farmed salmon from Norway to the U.S. West Coast.
As Heggelund says about "clean" salmon farming, "they are able to operate in fresh water, on land, in totally contained facilities."
The question of the day: Why aren't more salmon farmers using sustainable systems like Heggelund's?
