Call them a secret weapon, or refuse to admit that you carry them at all, but I know few top trout guides who don't carry ant patterns in their fly box. For those who want to get serious about tying ant patterns, AntWeb offers high-resolution photos of ants from almost all regions of the world, from the Cyphomyrmex wheeleri of California to the Dolichoderus quadripunctatus of Austria.

OK, I went to the site and watched the slide show. I now need therapy. Every childhood fear I had that was triggered by watching B-movie monster flicks where giant ants devour cities and trap busty young starlets in 1953 Chevy BelAir sedans, only to be stopped at the last minute by atomic cannons, came rushing back.
Thanks. I'm off to drink heavily now to wipe the images from my mind :-)
Ants have always been one of the summer trout catchers I keep in my fly boxes. From my end red ants seem to work best for me, but those darn trout will hit black without much issue.
