60 Years Later, Columbia Dam Still Brings Tears
"'That was the hardest thing to do,' says [Jay] Minthorn, a member of the Umatilla Tribe who fished the falls as a young man. "'To me it was one of the biggest funerals that I ever attended. People were up there mourning, crying, everything.'" The building of the Dalles Dam on the Columbia River had an almost unfathomable impact on local native American tribes, not to mention it's contribution to a 90% reduction in the number of salmon swimming in the historic watershed.
