"There, not far from an old corral and small spring, a couple of faint wheel tracks eased between jack-pines toward the river canyon. Sometimes, in wet Octobers, we'd park near the corral and trek into the tall timber that carpeted the slopes leading southward to Watson Butte. Our goal was the yellow-orange glow of Chanterelle mushrooms that sometimes carpeted the mossy forest floor. There were also Boletes, Corals, and an occasional Sparassis (Cauliflower) Radicata. All those went well with freshly caught trout or, just as a feast of mushroom delight."
