Nine-Foot Nails

Surely fly tying takes us to surprising destinations -- including the cosmetics aisle for trout bead colors. Casey Ressler examines his inner beautician in the Wasilla, AK Frontiersman. A good-humor piece that reminds me of my one-time embarrassment at buying doll hair for tarpon flies at the local hobby store (by the way, these can be killer flies tied in seconds).

Bamboo History

A nice piece by Dewey Hildebrand on his love for all things bamboo. Among the details, that one of the first bamboo culms used for construction of fly rods was Calcutta cane, and that the commonly used Tonkin cane is grown in China's Kwangtung Province between 1000 and 2000 feet above sea level.

The Yucatan's Sian Ka'an Biosphere

The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is one of the more remarkable areas of the world, and wraps itself around some of the finest saltwater fly fishing there is, particularly for permit. Since no new access roads are allowed there, the long bumpy ride to Punta Allen from its northern edge, or to Punta Herrero from its southern edge, promise to keep the place relatively unspoiled. Acension Bay is surrounded by the Reserve and is at the center of several destination fishing operations, including the well-known Casa Blanca on its souther edge, the smaller camps around Punta Allen, and Boca Paila just north. This piece from the Christian Science Monitor describes the Biosphere in more detail.

Houseboating South Florida

Peter Fong delivers a good read about his houseboating and fishing experience in Florida Bay and the upper Florida Keys in the New York Times. This is one of the best pieces by Mr. Fong I've read.

Ireland's Moy

A fascinating piece about the salmon and surrounding culture of Ireland's Moy river, which left me wishing I was there to partake of the "craic."

New Old Florida Fly Reels

A new saltwater reel series has arrived at Old Florida Reels: the Nautilus. From the looks of these photos, Old Florida's got some talented designers at work. Apparently this series is also their move into the higher-end reel market, given the new pricing ($400-600).
