The "best" tippet-to-fly knot depends on lots of variables, including the thickness of the hook wire, the diameter of your tippet material, the kind of tippet material, and the action you want on your fly.

Golden Dorado

"Devil's Gold"

Devil's Gold Golden Dorado Video

THE NAME of the village Oromomo — the access point to the Pluma and Itirisama Rivers in Bolivia — means "Devil's Gold." Apparently, the elders who named the village felt that riches of the region were somehow cursed. But for fly fishers, "Devil's Gold" offers a bright reflection, referring to golden dorado, one of the wildest of freshwater fish.

The Right Gear for Large Alaskan Rainbows

Stocked Trout

YOU CAN'T really count on dry-fly action in any given week; hitting a hatch is really down to luck. And virtually all surface action ends once the sockeyes show up in astonishing numbers. At first, the salmon simply displace the trout and push them around, but once there are salmon eggs in the water, you can't even get a trout to look upward. Chances are, unless you are planning on fishing the first few weeks of the season, you'll be fishing subsurface with streamers and egg patterns.

Video: Tying a March Brown Nymph

IN THIS VIDEO, Michael Yelton demonstrates how to tie a March Brown Nymph, a pattern that represents one of the first insects to become active in late winter and early spring — when the water reaches about 42 degrees.

These nymphs tend to be fairly large — usually size 12 to 16 — and trout will key onto these early-seasons nymphs and their emerger stages before they do most other insects, if only because of their size.

How to Hook Fish on Tiny Flies

Hooking Fish with Tiny Flies

"LET'S START with the issue of hooking fish — with any size hook. The first thing I would say is that most anglers are used to the idea that they need to plan their approach in terms of presentation?staying low enough to keep from spooking the fish, combining angle of approach with casting technique to minimize drag, etc. — but they rarely consider how those angles affect their ability to hook the fish."

RA BEATTIE's new DVD "Nervous Water" is a compilation of all the best work from the filmmaker's five years of shooting fly fishing adventures. With over two-and-a-half hours of video — several longer pieces along with a dozen or so short segments — the DVD is filled with examples of Beattie's ability to frame a fishing scene so that it can't possibly be forgotten. Beattie calls this segment from the DVD "the Redfish Cut." It's a narrative on sightcasting for waking and tailing redfish along the south Texas coastline.
